As seen by the popularity of #MotivationalMonday, there is something about motivational quotes that people just love.

And I completely understand the appeal of inspirational quotes. I love them myself. When I read my favourites, I inevitably find myself pumped up for the day ahead, ready to tackle any challenge.

Rather than another list of well-known motivational quotes article though, I wanted to write about lesser known quotes that are by no means less inspirational. With their ability to tell a story in just a few words, quotes are really quite self-explanatory. However, I think that delving into detail for each of these inspirational quotes can really help uncover the hidden potential of how they can help you.

Be Motivated by these Inspirational Quotes

Nothing will work unless you do. – Maya Angelou

How many times have you daydreamed about reaching success? How many times have you let yourself fantasise about getting that promotion, landing that big sale, hitting that personal best in the gym, but fail to make the means to achieving it in reality?

While thinking positive is something that can motivate you by letting yourself imagine the feeling if you actually reach your goals, it can also potentially debilitate you from taking the steps to actually do so.

This is where this inspirational quote comes in, “Nothing will work unless you do.”

At the end of the day, visualising success is beneficial and can greatly inspire you, I really do believe this. But it is important to bear in mind that this alone will not help you attain those dreams in reality.

You need to actually create a plan of action and determine the necessary steps to do so. You need to work and move forward. Otherwise, you will be stuck in a space where the only way you can reach your goals is through visualisation.

A professional writer is an amaetur who didn’t quit. – Richard Bach

Whether you are a writer, businessperson, singer, artist, or manager, everyone starts off as a beginner. Coming from someone who is just a couple of years into her career as a copywriter, and more recently, trying to pave her way as a freelancer, it is so easy to look at those who have “made it” and think that you are never going to get there.

Sometimes, you can even believe that they had it easy, luck was on their side, or they are just better than you.

It is easy to forget that once upon a time, they were just amateurs as well, stuck in the very same position as you are. They were probably looking at professionals in their field wondering how they would ever get to their level as well, thinking the exact same thoughts and being plagued by the same self-doubts and uncertainty.

The thing to remember is that they didn’t quit. They kept persevering to get to where they are today.

You have to do the same for yourself as well.

He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying. – Friedrich Nietzsche

This inspirational quote summarises the lesson of taking little steps to get to where you want to go, instead of just jumping in headfirst. You need to prepare yourself because great things take time and effort.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as instant or overnight success.

Bear this quote in mind if you feel like you are moving forward so slowly, or don’t feel like you are getting anywhere at all; you have to build yourself up. Most of the time, this is from the very very beginning.

Choose your thoughts how you choose your clothes. Make sure they are the best fit for the time, place and location. – Unknown

So many people allow negative thoughts to infiltrate their minds. I am not talking about the kind that can spur you into action and help prepare you for any potential obstacles but ones that weigh you down and debilitate your ability to move forward.

The kind that paralyses you and takes control.

Whether you are preparing for an important presentation, meeting, or exam, your mental game is crucial. Just as this quote stipulates, you need to make sure that your thoughts are helping you in whatever situation that you are in.

You wouldn’t choose gym clothes for a job interview because it is what is comfortable or want to stay in the familiar. You would choose the appropriate attire that will increase your chances of landing that position.

This is the same with your thoughts. Adopt an attitude that will help see you through such as confidence, determination, resilience, or any other positive emotion that the situation calls for.

It can really make a difference in how well you perform and what results you can achieve.

One of the fastest ways to improve your life is to simply do what you said you were going to do. – Unknown

How many times have you said that you will do something only to postpone it to tomorrow?

I know that I am definitely guilty of that.

Too many times, I’ve put off writing an article even though I said I would do it.

This makes me unproductive and leaves a lot of things on my mind. It’s crazy when you think about how simple the solution is; I could easily just clear my head by doing what I said I was going to do.

Some things people, including myself, delay things for years. Maybe it was because the timing wasn’t right, you were scared or anxious, comfortable being where you are, or because you were lazy and didn’t put in the effort.

For whatever reason or (let’s be honest) excuse, that you have, you need to just do it (thank you, Nike).

Future you will thank you for it later.

Action is the foundational key to all success. – Pablo Picasso

As you can probably tell by now, these inspirational quotes have a common theme – action – so I am going to keep this one short and simple.

Merely wanting something is not enough. You need to go and get it yourself.

Inspirational quotes never fail to teach a valuable lesson in just a few short words. They can really assist in motivating you and giving you the attitude and determination to attain your ambitions.

Do you like these inspirational quotes? Which one was your favourite? What other ones do you live by? Leave me a comment below, I would love to know!

  • Wonderful motivational quotes, Emily. I especially love the one by Maya Angelou.

  • I myself have a favorite action-related quote:

“What you can do or think you can do, begin it.”
    – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Perhaps “it” will be a short-term effort, perhaps it will become a long-term project. Maybe it will be a success, maybe it will be a failure. But whatever it is, give it a shot, see what you can get out of it, get started.

    • I really like that one Andy! Thanks for sharing.

  • The quote about not quitting at writing is so true, and it applies to most other things in life as well. Perseverance can see us though a lot.

  • Hi Emily! I really love these quotes you have, especially “A professional writer is an amaetur who didn’t quit” and the one about doing what you said you’ll do.

I hope you’re doing well!! I have been so busy with working and personal life, haven’t had a chance to visit that many blogs. So happy to see you’re still blogging. Yours is actually the first I visited when I started blogging 2 years ago!!

    xoxo Emily

    • Yes I remember visiting your blog too when I first started blogging! It’s great to see that we are both still at it, even if we do go offline here and there 🙂 Thanks so much for being a loyal reader since the start. It means a lot!! 🙂

  • LOVE THESE! I enjoy reading inspirational quotes way too much. The first one is one of my favourite ones, I always cite it when times get rough. We need to work forwards our goals, they won’t get achieved by themselves 🙂

    • Yes I can get stuck just reading through pages of inspirational quotes! They can be quite addictive. Yeah that one is my favourite too. Short, simple, straight to the point and oh so true.

  • Diana Maria

A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit- I LOVE that! That’s so true, and so inspiring because at times I feel like I’m still working as an amateur with a long way to go, but everyone starts as one! These are all wonderful and inspiring quotes, thank you for these Emily xx

Sending love & light your way,

    My Lovelier Days

    • Everyone forgets the professionals were once beginners, and keeping this in mind can really help to motivate us. Thank you for comment 🙂

  • I collect quotations so I’m a sucker for this kind of post, and you’ve complied a great selection Emily! They’re all good but the one that speaks to me is “One of the fastest ways to improve your life is to simply do what you said you were going to do.” Ah, if only more people followed that advice! Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

    • Thanks Marquita 🙂 That one is one of my favourites too alongside “Nothing will work unless you do”

  • Phoenicia Oyeniyi

Excellent article Emily. You have such a flair for writing. I am truly inspired by your talent.

Great quotes and I agree that you must take action. All the visualising in the world will not take you from A to B.

I love to write and post one article every Sunday – working full-time, mother, wife and church ministry does not give room for much more!

    • Thanks so much. You definitely have great time management skills to be able to do all that!

  • Rosary Natania

I love all these quotes! Just what I need to get me motivated to face the rest of the week, and I agree that action is ultimately what gets us closer to our goals and dreams. Thanks for sharing these quotes!

Another one is: “Action may not bring you happiness – but there is no happiness without action”, Disraeli once said.
